Karen J. Helfrich, LCSW-C, Clinical Director
Often, this space is used to talk about credentials. I have those (yawn), but I also have credibility.
I've been there. Lost in the pit, not sure how I got there and heck if I knew how to get out.
I've sat on some couches and talked circles around my "stuff." It helped, but not enough.
What does help is getting into the right here and right now.
Our right here and right now is happening in our minds, our hearts, and our bodies at every moment. When we can slow down and pay attention to our present moment experience, we discover a path to our healing.
I work with the body because this is where the juice is. The felt sense of intensity that rises and falls as we experience our daily lives, is like the soundtrack to a movie. We may not notice it all the time, but the music dramatically influences the emotional "truth" of a scene. So too does the body provide a soundtrack, creating our "truth" in each moment.
This work is about listening to the music within you and opening to some new music that wants to play.
I'm passionate about sharing this with you.
Knowledge, tools, and skills that enable you to forge your path back to yourself.
Many people seeking psychotherapy want to know if they will feel comfortable with the therapist, if the therapist will understand them, and how can this particular therapist help.
Some people have had therapy before and have mixed feelings about their experience.
Some have never had therapy and are not sure what to expect.
I am not a smile-and-nod therapist.
My style is active, engaged, and challenging.
I am invested in your goals and want you to discover within you the freedom you seek.
I ask a lot of questions and listen deeply to your experience. I teach you about how your mind (thoughts), heart (emotions), and body (nervous system) work together to create your experience; and offer skills via in-session practices and homework.
